Sights in Park Forest
Parks Forest is a suburb in Chicago’s southland. The village is approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Chicago’s Loop and about 10 miles (16 km) west of the city of Gary, Indiana. Park Forest was the first planned community in the United States built on the principle of racial integration. This planned community was built in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
The site for Park Forest was acquired in 1946–47 by the American CommunityBuilders, a New Yorkbased firm. The first residents moved into Park Forest in 1948. Park Forest was originally conceived as a “Levittown” style planned community, similar to the company’s other developments in Willingboro Township, New Jersey and Levittown, New York. However, the Company later decided to make Park Forest a model for integrated living, inspired by Fairfield Hills, Connecticut.
The village is home to several Points of Interest including the Park Forest Aqua Center, a water park with an Olympic size pool, slides, and a lazy river; the Park Forest Recreation and Parks Department, which offers a variety of programs and events for all ages; the Park Forest Farmers’ Market, which is held weekly from May through October; and the Park Forest Historic Society Museum, which is housed in the village’s first public library building and contains exhibits on the history of Park Forest.
History of Park Forest
In the early 1940s, Park Forest was conceived as a planned community for returning World War II veterans and their families. The first homes were built in 1946, and Park Forest rapidly grew into a thriving suburb. Many of the original homes were designed by famed architect Philip Johnson.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Park Forest became known as a “model community” and was featured in magazines and newspapers around the country. In 1967, Park Forest made headlines when it became the first American city to completely banish billboards.
Today, Park Forest is a vibrant community of over 21,000 residents. The city has a rich history and is home to a number of cultural and natural attractions.
