History of Paris (Texas)
Named for the French capital city and settled by French colonists in the early 1800s, Paris is a small city in northwestern Lamar County, Texas, United States. Lamar County was established in 1841 and is named for Republic of Texas patriot Lucius Lamar. Paris is the county seat. The city’s estimated 2019 population was 25,171.
Paris began as a stopover on the Three Forks of the Trinity route. The site was first surveyed in 1839 by George W. Wright on behalf of Shadrack Babcock, Uriah Lott, and John Weed, who were contracted by the Republic of Texas to build a road from the Red River crossing at Jonesborough (now Clarksville) to the Sabine River crossing at Gaines’ Ferry (now Sabine Lake). The 33.5mile road, laid out in December 1839, became known as the Upper Road. On June 15, 1840, John Young, accompanied by Shadrack Babcock, Uriah Lott, and John Weed, laid out and staked 58 town lots. The first auction of lots took place on October 1, 1840. In 1848, when the provision in the Texas Constitution requiring the Lamar County seat to be located within 2mi of the center of the county was declared invalid, the county court moved the seat from Pleasant Mound to its current location in Paris.
The city’s name is believed to have been chosen by Younger, babcock, Lott, and Weed in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew, Louis Napoleon, who was elected president of the French Republic in 1848 (and later declared himself emperor as Napoleon III). The quartet may also have been inspired by the city’s large percentage of French colonists.
The First Methodist Church was organized in July 1850, and the first Baptist church was established in 1851. The first school started in 1852. The Paris Male and Female Academy was the city’s first institute of higher learning, opening in 1854. It served as a coeducational boarding school until it burned down in 1887.
The first newspaper, the Lamar County Echo, began publication in April 1852. In August 1852, the first district court convened in the city. The first bank opened for business in 1855.
In May 1861, citizens of Paris voted in a municipal election to secede from the Union and join the Confederate States of America. Lamar County also voted in favor of secession.
During the American Civil War, several notable skirmishes occurred in and near Paris. In October 1862, Union and Confederate forces clashed in the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, some 200mi northwest of Paris, resulting in a Confederate victory. In March 1864, a Union cavalry raid led by Brigadier General Benjamin Grierson passed through Paris en route to Tolbert’s Station (presentday Reno, Texas), where the Union troops destroyed a Confederate camp and a large quantity of supplies. Several months later, in June 1864, a second Union raiders, this time under Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis, again passed through Paris on their way to Tolbert’s Station; the Union troops were unsuccessful in their attempt to destroy a large Confederate cottonginning operation in the vicinity.
In 1867, freed slaves from Lamar County and other areas in Northeast Texas formed Unity Township, the first AfricanAmerican township in the state. Paris was reincorporated in 1873.
The International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) organized a lodge in Paris in 1875. The Lodge #180 building, constructed in 1884, is still in use today and is the oldest Odd Fellows building in continuous use west of the Mississippi River.
The Santa Fe Railroad reached Paris in 1880. A paved brick street, one of the first in North Texas, was built in 1882.
In 1892, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the city’s first brick church, was built. The following year, city residents approved a bond issue to establish a public water works. The first Paris city hall was built in 1895.
In 1896, the streets of Paris were lit for the first time by electricity generated at a power plant on Cypress Creek.
On April 9, 1898, Parisians awoke to find the American flag flying over the old courthouse. The U.S. had annexed the Hawaiian Islands the previous year, and now the Spanish Empire was crumbling. Thecity’s young men quickly enlisted in theSecond Regiment of Texas Volunteer Infantry to fight in the SpanishAmerican War.
