History of Paris (Kentucky)
Paris is a home ruleclass city in Bourbon County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population within city limits was 10,537 at the 2010 U.S. census. It is the seat of Bourbon County and is located at the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Licking River.
What is now Paris was laid out by John Winslow in 1789, making it the oldest town in the state. It was originallychartered as Hopewell that same year. The next year, the Virginia General Assembly established Hopewell as the county seat of Bourbon County. In 1793, the town was renamed “Paris” after the French capital in a wave of antiAnglicism.
Since its settlement, Paris has been an important center of education in the region. The first school in the county was established there in 1787, and the town was home to bourbonism’s first college, Miami Female College, from 1837 until it closed in 1918.
In 1874, the Cincinnati Southern Railway completed its line to the town, begun in 1868. Through the 1880s, as the bourbon whiskey industry grew, several added distilleries were built near or in the town, including the Glenmore Distillery Company in 1879 and Leopold Bros. & Co. in 1888.
The largest employer in the county for much of the 20th century was the Imperial Tobacco Company’s Paris tobacco warehouses and factories. With the decline of the tobacco industry began a slow economic decline from which the town has only begun to recover.
Therotunda of the 1910 courthouse, designed by John Russell Pope, is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
