History of Palmyra
Palmyra is a city in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1843 by the Methodist missionaries Hiram Bingham and his wife, Harriet. They were sent to Oregon by the Methodist Episcopal Church to establish a mission among the Native Americans. The Binghams named the new settlement after the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria.
The Binghams were the first white settlers in the area. They were followed by other families, who established farms and ranches. Palmyra soon became a stop on the Oregon Trail, the main route for settlers traveling west in the mid19th century.
In 1852, Palmyra was designated as the county seat of Linn County. The city was incorporated in 1857.
