History of Painesville

Painesville, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Lake County, Ohio, United States. It is located 36 miles northeast of Cleveland and 19 miles west of Mentor. The population was 19,563 at the 2010 census.

The area that would become Painesville was settled in the late eighteenth century by pioneers from New England. The town was initially called Painsville, after its founder, Colonel Aaron Payne. In 1808, the townspeople voted to change the spelling to its current version, Painesville.

Painesville was officially incorporated as a city in 1832. The city’s first mayor was Alvah Little, who served from 1832 to 1834.

Painesville’s growth was fueled by its location on the crossroads of two major stagecoach lines, one running north and south between Cleveland and Warren, and the other east and west between Erie, Pennsylvania and Toledo. In 1827, the Erie Canal opened, making Painesville an important stop for lake vessels.

The city continued to grow in the nineteenth century with the arrival of several manufacturing businesses. The first paper mill in Ohio was established in Painesville in 1827. The Eagle Glass Factory, which opened in 1837, was one of the first in the state. The city’s first iron foundry was established in 1841.

The twentieth century brought further growth to Painesville. The population nearly doubled between 1900 and 1930, from 9,748 to 19,396. The city reached its peak population in 1970, with 20,526 residents.

Since the 1970s, Painesville has experienced a decline in population as people have moved to the suburbs. The population was 19,563 at the 2010 census.
