History of Owatonna

The city of Owatonna, Minnesota is located in the southern part of the state along Interstate 35. It is the county seat of Steele County with a population of just over 25,000 people. The city was founded in 1854 by settlers from New York and Pennsylvania who were looking for good farmland. The first platted village was called Blooming Prairie. The city was renamed in 1858 after the Dakota Sioux word for “straight river”, which referred to the Straight River that flows through the city.
