History of Osceola
Osceola is a city in Clarke County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,929 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. The city was named for the last Seminole leader, Osceola.
The first settlers in what would become Osceola arrived in the fall of 1845. In December 1845, the first Clarke County election was held at the home of William Phillips, who would later be elected the first county judge. The first county seat was located in Murray, which is now part of the city of Osceola. In April 1846, the relocated seat of government to the center of the county in Osceola. The first courthouse was built that year.
In the early years of Clarke County’s history, the majority of the settlers were from the southern states, particularly Kentucky and Tennessee. This led to Clarke County being nicknamed “Little Dixie”. The influence of the southern settlers can still be seen in the architecture of some of the older buildings in the city.
Osceola was incorporated as a city in 1855. The first mayor was Hiram Price, who later served as Governor of Iowa.
The city grew steadily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The population reached 2,325 by 1900. The city was hit hard by the Great Depression, but recovered in the 1930s.
The city continued to grow in the postWorld War II years. The population reached 4,348 by 1980. The city has experienced some population decline in recent years, but has stabilized at around 4,900 residents.
