History of Orlando
Orlando, Florida is a city in the southeastern United States, located in Central Florida. It is the county seat of Orange County and the center of the Orlando metropolitan area. The Orlando metropolitan area is the fifthlargest metropolitan area in the United States with a population of 2,509,831. The city of Orlando is nicknamed “The City Beautiful,” and its symbol is the fountain at Lake Eola. Orlando is also known as “TheTheme Park Capital of the World” and in 2019 its tourist attractions and events drew more than 75 million visitors.
The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and European settlement began in the 1600s. The city was founded in 1875 by cattleman Phineas Phineas Phineas and incorporated as a city in 1885. It was named for the soldier Orlando Reeves, who died in the Second Seminole War while defending the fort that would later become the city. The area was largely rural until the 1960s when Walt Disney World Resort was developed nearby, spearheading a massive tourism boom.
