History of Ontario (Oregon)

Ontario, Oregon is a city located in the northeastern part of the state. It is the county seat of Malheur County. The city is situated on the Snake River, which forms the border between Oregon and Idaho. The city’s name comes from the Native American word meaning “place of great waters”.

The first settlers in the area were trappers and hunters who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1864, the city was platted by George Chaffee and Joel Palmer. It was originally called Paris, but the name was changed to Ontario when the post office was established in 1867.
