Oneonta is known as “City of the Hills” because of its elevated topography. The land was originally owned by the community of Otego. When the Susquehanna River was established as the western boundary of the state of New York in 1786, the area became part of Montgomery County. The Town of Oneonta was organized within Montgomery County on April 16, 1807. Otsego County was organized on February 16, 1816, with Cooperstown as its county seat. The name “Oneonta” was adopted as the city’s name when it was incorporated on April 19, 1865; it had been the village’s name since 1848.

The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 was a boon to the city, which became a regional transportation hub. The opening of the canal led to increased settlement and development in the area.
