Olean, New York, is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southwestern New York state. The city is situated on the Genesee River, approximately 55 miles (89 kilometers) south of Buffalo, and is the largest city in Cattaraugus County.
The first European Settlers to the area were French fur trappers, and the first permanent settlement was established in 1769. The city was incorporated in 1808 and was named after an Algonquian Indian word meaning “Beautiful Valley.”
Today, Olean is a thriving community with a growing arts and culture scene. The city is home to a number of museums and art galleries, as well as a performing arts center. There are also several parks and recreation areas, including a waterslide park, a public pool, and a golf course.

History of Olean
In 1769, a party led by the British colonel Johan Adam Zahlbruckner made a crude map of the area while traveling through the West Branch Susquehanna River valley.Zahlbruckner’s group mistakenly thought they were in Maryland, and the map has since become known as the ” Maryland Map.” The first real settlement in the Olean area was established in 1770, when James Bradley representing Pennsylvania (which then claimed the area) erected a cabin near presentday Plymouth, New York.
Settlement increased in 1775, after the American Revolutionary War began, and again in 1784 after the war ended and the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. In 1793, New York State established its own government, and the area which includes presentday Olean was partitioned into towns. Townships were created, including the town of Olean, which encompassed the entirety of presentday Cattaraugus County. Olean became a village in 1853, and was incorporated as a city in 1913.
The first major industry in Olean was the lumber industry. Sawmills were constructed along the Allegheny River, and timber was rafted downstream to Pittsburgh where it was used in construction and for fuel. The early settlers used the rivers for transportation, and there was considerable trade between Olean and Pittsburgh. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, shipbuilding also became a common industry in Olean.
Around 1808, the first steamboat navigating the Allegheny River visited Olean, and by 1811, regular steamboat traffic had begun. The construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 brought more people and commerce to the city. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad arrived in 1849, furthering Olean’s industrial and commercial growth.
The population of Olean grew from 1,893 in 1880 to 8,262 in 1890, and to 13,352 by 1900. Manufacturing became an important part of the city’s economy at this time, with businesses such as NashStream, JohnsonSmith Company (later to become WahleKendrick), American Nickelodeon, and the Elgin Watches Company setting up operations. Olean’s location near the Allegheny River and its tributaries made it a center for the construction of wooden barges and boats, especially during the Civil War when demand for transport was high.
The oil industry also played a role in Olean’s development, with the first oil well being drilled in 1859. The discovery of oil in nearby Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1875 resulted in a boom which brought many new people and businesses to the area. The population of Olean more than doubled between 1870 and 1880, reaching 18,564. The success of the oil industry led to the development of other industries such as glassmaking and steel, which also took advantage of Olean’s proximity to the river.
The development of industry in Olean continued in the early 20th century. The American Brass Company was founded in 1902, and the H. J. Heinz Company opened a factory in 1912. Olean became known as the “Brass City” due to the large number of brass mills in operation, and was also home to the largest steel mill in the world, the New York State Steel Company. The city reached a peak population of 32,614 in 1930.
The Great Depression and the decline of the coal and oil industries in the mid20th century led to a decrease in population and a rise in poverty in Olean. The city began to rebound in the late 20th century, however, with the development of new industries such as healthcare and retail. Olean’s population was 21,376 at the 2010 census.
