History of Old Saybrook
Although the area now known as Old Saybrook was first settled by the English in 1635, the town’s official founding date is October 31, 1636. The original settlers of the area chose to name their new town Saybrook in honor of Lord Saye and Sele and Lady Brooke, the primary financial backers of the Connecticut Colony. In 1644, the colony’s residents electeds to rename the town Old Saybrook in order to distinguish it from Newtown (now Cambridge), which had been established the year before.
During the American Revolutionary War, Old Saybrook was the site of the Battle of Groton Heights, one of the conflict’s deadliest engagements. A minor skirmish that took place on September 6, 1781, the Battle of Groton Heights was notable for the fact that it involved more casualties than any other encounter during the entire war.
After the war, Old Saybrook became a thriving shipping center and resort town. Its bustling harbor and convenient location near New York City made it a popular destination for tourists, and its proximity to Long Island Sound made it a popular summer getaway for affluent New Yorkers.
