Okmulgee, Oklahoma is a city in the United States. It is the county seat of Okmulgee County and is the capital of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, which is the second largest federally recognized Native American tribe in the United States. The name Okmulgee is derived from the Muscogee word oki meaning “boiling water” and muscogee meaning “people of the swamp”.
The city was founded in 1868 as a Creek Nation town. The tribal government moved here from nearby Hickory Ground in 1878. The United States government built a federal courthouse in Okmulgee in 1889. The city was incorporated in 1898.
In the early 20th century, coal mining, oil production, and agriculture fueled Okmulgee’s economy. The city’s population peaked at over 20,000 in 1930. The Great Depression and Dust Bowl caused many residents to lose their jobs and homes. The population declined to about 12,000 by 1940.
