Oklahoma City’s history begins with the settling of the Land Run of 1889, which opened the former Indian Territory to American pioneer settlement. The city was originally called Oklahoma Station, but it was quickly renamed Oklahoma City. The city continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, and by the mid1920s, it had become the state’s largest city with a population of over200,000.
