History of Ogden
Not many cities can claim that a president, the famous gangster Al Capone, and the first transcontinental railroad all crossed their streets, but Ogden, Utah can. This city of just over 84,000 people has a rich history that is intertwined with the history of America itself.
Ogden was first settled by the Weber River where it exited from the Wasatch Mountains. The river got its name from the trappers who first settled in the area in the early 1800s. Ogden became known as a hot spot for young men headed west to trap beaver. In 1846, the Mormon pioneers arrived in Ogden and began to farm the land. The city was officially incorporated in 1851 and named after Peter Skene Ogden, a wellknown trapper in the area.
The city truly began to grow when the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. Ogden became a major hub for the Union Pacific Railroad and the city’s population exploded. This growth continued into the early twentieth century. In the 1920s, Ogden was known as a “wideopen” city where anything goes. It was during this time that the infamous gangster Al Capone visited Ogden.
The Great Depression hit Ogden hard, but the city rebounded in the 1940s with the help of defense jobs from the nearby Hill Air Force Base. The city continued to grow in the second half of the twentieth century and today is a vibrant community with a rich history.
