A visit to Oceanside isn’t complete without a walk or bike ride down the iconic wooden pier, built in 1888. Stretching 1,942 feet out into the ocean, it’s the longest wooden pier on the West Coast. Along the way, you’ll get stunning views of the coastline, surfers catching waves below, and boats passing by. At the end of the pier, there’s a Ruby’s Diner, a popular spot for a bite with a view.

History of Oceanside
Oceanside is located in San Diego County, California. It was incorporated on July 3, 1888. The city is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Camp Pendleton, and Carlsbad.
Oceanside has a long and rich history. The area was originally inhabited by the Luiseño people. The city’s name, “Oceanside”, is derived from the Luiseño name, “O shande”.
The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sailed into San Diego Bay in 1542. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolá led a expedition from Mexico to explore the region. In 1774, Pedro Fages explored the area and named it “San Luis Rey de Francia” (Saint Louis, King of France).
In 1803, Juan Bautista de Anza led a expedition from Mexico which established a route along the coast from San Diego to San Francisco. This route, now known as the “King’s Highway”, was used by settlers moving to California during the early 1800s.
In 1833, the Mexican government granted Rancho Oceanside to Juan María Osuna. The rancho included the area that is now downtown Oceanside.
In 1847, the United States annexed California from Mexico and the area became part of the US. In 1850, San Diego County was established and Oceanside became part of the county.
During the American Civil War, Oceanside was a stop on the “Underground Railroad” which helped slaves escape to freedom in California.
In 1887, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway built a railroad line through Oceanside. This led to the development of the city as a resort town.
In 1903, the Oceanside Pier was built. It was originally used to load freight onto ships. Today, it is a popular tourist destination.
In 1925, the seals were introduced to Oceanside’s harbor. The harbor has since become a home for a large colony of California sea lions.
In 1942, Camp Pendleton was established as a Marine Corps base. The base has played an important role in the history of Oceanside.
In the 1950s, Oceanside’s economy began to diversify. Tourism remained important, but new industries, such as manufacturing and engineering, began to develop.
Today, Oceanside is a thriving city with a strong sense of community. The city’s beaches, pier, and harbor are popular destinations for locals and visitors alike.
