History of Ocean Springs

In 1699, French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and his men made their first landfall near Ocean Springs while searching for a suitable site to build a fort. They found a peninsula that jutted out into the Mississippi Sound and decided to call it Biloxi, after the indigenous people they’d encountered living there.

The area remained largely undeveloped for the next century, until American settlers began moving in from neighboring states in the early 1800s. The first permanent American settlement was established in 1816, and Ocean Springs was officially incorporated as a city in 1854.

Since then, Ocean Springs has gone through a number of changes, developing first as a resort town and then later as a bustling commercial center. The city’s economy was initially built on seafood and tourism, but today it is also home to a number of businesses and industries.

Despite its relatively small size, Ocean Springs has a rich and diverse history. This is evident in its architecture, which includes a mix of styles from different eras. The city’s historic downtown district is especially notable, and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Today, Ocean Springs is a thriving community with a strong sense of identity. Its residents are proud of the city’s history and heritage, and are working to preserve and protect it for future generations.
