History of Oakland (Maryland)
The first settlers in presentday Oakland were huntergatherers who lived in small camps along the streams that flow through the area. The first of these, who arrived about 10,000 years ago, were the PaleoIndians. They were followed by the ArchaicIndians, who arrived about 4,000 years ago and began to settle into more permanent villages. The Woodland period began about 1,500 years ago, with the introduction of pottery and the domestication of plants and animals.
The first Europeans to visit the Oakland area were the Spanish, who came in the early 1600s in search of gold and other minerals. The Spanish did not establish a permanent presence in the area, however, and it was not until the late 1700s that European settlers began to arrive in significant numbers. The first of these were British colonists, who established a number of farms in the area.
The town of Oakland was founded in 1852, and named for the many oak trees that grew in the area. It was originally a stop on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and grew steadily as a transportation and trade hub throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
