History of Oak Harbor

The first recorded history of the city of Oak Harbor, Washington dates back to the early 1800s when it was still a part of the Oregon Country. The Hudson’s Bay Company, a British fur trading company, had established a number of posts in the area and John Work, an employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company, was the first European to set foot in the Oak Harbor area. He and his party spent a night on the beach in June of 1825.

In the years that followed, the area saw a number of explorers and traders pass through, but no permanent settlements were established until the 1850s. In 1853, the United States signed the Treaty of Medicine Creek, which opened up the Puget Sound region to American settlers. The same year, a man named Isaac Ebey settled on Whidbey Island, which is where Oak Harbor is located.

Ebey’s Cabin, as it came to be known, was the first American settlement in the area and it served as a stopping point for miners and other settlers heading to the California Gold Rush. Ebey was also a farmer and he helped to cleared the land around his cabin for farming. In the years that followed, more and more people settled in the area and a small community began to take shape.

The community grew even larger when the Admiralty Inlet Military Reservation was established in 1891. The reservation was created in order to provide a place for the United States military to build fortifications to protect the Puget Sound from a possible attack by the Canadian Navy. The military reservation turned into a major economic driver for the community and it helped to spur even more growth.

In 1915, the City of Oak Harbor was officially incorporated and it has continued to grow ever since. Today, the city is home to over 22,000 people and it is a thriving community with a rich history.
