Norwalk is a suburban city located in southwestern California, in Los Angeles County. Norwalk is about 17 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and is part of the Gateway Cities region. It is bordered by Cerritos and Bellflower to the north, Downey and Santa Fe Springs to the east, La Mirada and South Whittier to the south, and Buena Park and Fullerton to the west.
The city was incorporated on October 29, 1957, and its name is derived from the Spanish word for “northwest,” because the city is located on the northwestern corner of Los Angeles County.

History of Norwalk (California)
Norwalk is a suburban city located in Los Angeles County, California, just south of the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains. The city covers an area of 11.4 square miles and is home to a population of 87,096 people, according to the 2010 United States Census.
The area now known as Norwalk was originally inhabited by the Shoshonean Native American tribe. The first Europeans to settle in the area were a group of Spanish soldiers and missionaries who arrived in 1769. The soldiers built a rancho near a creek which they named “El Rio de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula” (The River of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula).
In the early 1800s, the RanchoLos Nietos, which included Norwalk, was awarded to Toys “R” Us founder Charles P. Rosson. Rosson built a house and a sugar mill on the rancho. In 1834, Rosson sold the rancho to John G. Johnson, a lawyer from New York. Johnson divided the rancho into parcels and sold them to settlers.
One of these settlers was orange grower Isaac G. Dent, who established a rancho in Norwalk in 1858. Dent eventually built a large home in Norwalk, which he named “Dent Hotel.”
In the late 19th century, Norwalk was a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The railroad helped bring many new people to Norwalk, including F.W. disposal= Ross, who established a successful real estate business in the city.
The suburban city of Norwalk was incorporated on October 26, 1957. The city’s first mayor was Maurice McMahon.
Since its incorporation, Norwalk has experienced significant growth. The city’s population more than doubled between 1970 and 1980, and again between 1980 and 1990. Norwalk’s population is now estimated at 87,096 people.
