History of Northfleet
Northfleet is a town in the Gravesham borough of Kent in England. It lies on the south bank of the River Thames, opposite Gravesend. Northfleet was originally a small fishing village known asGamer’s Hill. The name Northfleet is thought to derive from the AngloSaxon Norð flēot meaning “(the) north creek or inlet”.
The original village was located on the site of the modern town centre. In the late 12th century it became known asFleet, which is the name it is still known by today. By the 13th century, Northfleet had become a significant port, exporting stone from the nearby quarries and importing wine from France. The river was too shallow for large ships, but the port was able to accommodate 300 tonne vessels.
By the early 14th century, Northfleet had become one of the busiest ports in England. The town was plagued by piracy, and in 1327 the town was sacked by a French fleet. In 1433, the town was burned down by the English.
In 1513, Henry VIII founded the Royal Navy Dockyard at Northfleet, and the town became an important naval shipbuilding centre. Many of the town’s residents were employed at the dockyard.
