History of North Kingstown
North Kingstown is an affluent suburban town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The town was established in 1686 and incorporated in 1722. It is the home of the Naval War College and the US Naval Justice School. The population was 15,671 at the 2010 census.
The area now known as North Kingstown was first settled in 1638 as Kings Towne by a group led by Colonel Richard Smith. In 1663, the name of the town was changed to Kingsbury. It was renamed North Kingstown in 1710.
The town was part of Kings County, Rhode Island until 1729 when it became part of Washington County. North Kingstown was incorporated as a town in 1722.
The town grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was a major center of the slave trade in the 18th century. More than 1000 slave ships passed through the town’s port, bound for the West Indies.
In the 19th century, North Kingstown became a popular summer resort for the wealthy. It was also the site of several large estates, including the summer homes of John D. Rockefeller and Cornelius Vanderbilt.
In the 20th century, the town’s economy shifted from agriculture and fishing to manufacturing and tourism. The town is home to several beaches, parks, and historic sites.
