Niles is a city in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The city’s population was 20,066 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown–Warren–Boardman, OHPA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was founded in 1824 by James Heaton, who owned part of the town plot. It was originally named after Hezekiah Heaton, but was later changed to honor Joshua Niles, who had helped platted the village. Niles was incorporated as a city in 1866.
The city’s industries have included steel mills, packaging and rubber plants, and automobile parts manufacturing; the city is now chiefly residential except for some retail establishments and a medical center. The city is served by the WarrenTrumbull County Public Library.
The city is governed by a mayor and a ninemember city council. The current mayor is Thomas Scarnecchia. Niles’ income tax rate is 2.25%.

Niles is a city in Ohio, United States. The city’s history dates back to the early 19th century. The first settlers in the area were Pennsylvania Germans who arrived in the early 1800s. The town was originally known as Westfield. In 1824, the name was changed to Niles in honor of Colonel James Niles, the director of the Ohio and Erie Canal.
Niles served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and abolitionist John Brown operated a station here. In 1866, Niles was the site of one of the largest race riots in Ohio history. The violence began when a group of white men attacked a group of black men who were trying to vote. The riot resulted in the death of two men and the destruction of several businesses.
In the late 19th century, Niles was a thriving industrial city. The city’s industries included steel mills, glass factories, and pottery works. In the early 20th century, the city’s population began to decline as its industries began to move away. Today, Niles is a small city with a population of just over 20,000. The city is home to a number of historic buildings and sites, including the John Brown House and the WardThomas House.
