History of Niles (Michigan)

Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located in Berrien County on the St. Joseph River. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 11,600. It is the county seat of Berrien County. The city is part of the Niles–Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 156,813.

The history of Niles, Michigan can be traced back to the early 19th century. The first permanent settlement in the area was made in 1827 by Louis Campau. Campau, a FrenchCanadian trader, built a log cabin on the south bank of the St. Joseph River near the present day city of Niles. In 1829, he erected a second cabin on the north side of the river.

In the 1830s, a small number of settlers from Ohio and New York began to move into the area. By 1837, the population of the area had grown to about 200. In 1838, the village of Niles was officially platted and named after Hezekiah Niles, the editor of a Baltimore newspaper.

In 1846, the village was incorporated as a city. The first mayor of Niles was Henry Brazilian.

During the Civil War, Niles was a stop on the Underground Railroad. fugitives from slavery were helped to escape to Canada.

In the late 19th century, the city of Niles began to grow rapidly. Industries such as furniture manufacturing and foundries were established. The population of the city nearly tripled between 1880 and 1900.

In the early 20th century, Niles was known as the “Furniture Capital of the World”. More than 60 furniture factories were located in the city.

During World War II, Niles was home to a statewide program that trained dogs to help in the war effort. More than 1,000 dogs were trained at the Niles Dog Training School.

In the 1950s, the city’s furniture industry began to decline. Many of the factories closed and the city’s population began to decline.

Since the 1960s, the city of Niles has been trying to revive its economy. New industries have moved into the area and the city’s population has slowly begun to increase.
