History of Newent

Newent is a small town in Gloucestershire, England, with a population of just over 5,000 people. It is situated on the River Leadon, and was historically part of Herefordshire.

The earliest record of Newent is from the 12th century, when it was known as Noent. At this time, it was a small hamlet with just a few houses. By the 13th century, it had grown to become a market town, and in 1284 it was granted a charter by King Edward I.

During the 14th century, the town suffered from the Black Death, and its population declined. In 1573, a fire destroyed much of the town, and it took many years to recover.

During the English Civil War, the town was strongly proParliamentarian, and was besieged by Royalist forces in 1643. The town later fell to the Parliamentarians, and was used as a base for their operations in the area.

In the 18th century, Newent became known for its leather industry, and many of the town’s buildings were constructed from locallyproduced leather. The industry declined in the 19th century, but Newent remains an important market town, with a strong sense of community.
