History of Newcastle

Newcastle is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 10,380 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Newcastle Golf Club, the Coal Creek YMCA Family Campground, and the Summerhill winery.

The city was incorporated on September 16, 1994, after a successful incorporation vote of 1,996 to 56. The city is bordered by Bellevue to the west, Issaquah to the southwest, and Renton to the south and southeast.

Newcastle was named for Newcastle, England, and was first settled in the late 1800s by European immigrants. The city was originally a farming community, with coal mining becoming the primary industry in the early 20th century. The city was home to several large coal mines, the most famous of which was the Newcastle Mine, which operated from 1901 to 1963.

In the 1960s, the city began to transition away from coal mining, and today coal is no longer mined in the city. The city has instead turned to other industries, such as software development, retail, and healthcare.

The city is served by the Issaquah School District. The district operates four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school within the city limits.

Newcastle is located at the southern tip of Lake Boren, and is home to a number of parks, including Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, Newcastle Beach Park, and Lake Boren Park. The city is also home to the Heritage Park & Ride, which offers free parking and shuttle service to Bellevue and Seattle.
