Newburyport is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, on the Merrimack River. The population was 17,416 at the 2010 census. A historic seaport with a vibrant tourism industry, Newburyport includes part of Plum Island. The mooring, winter storage and launching of recreational boats contribute to the town’s economy. A Coast Guard station overlooks the mouth of the Merrimack River. Newburyport is the principal city of the Newburyport, MA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Essex County.
The area was first settled by the Pawtucket Indians in 1635 along the banks of the Merrimack River. Newburyport was incorporated as a city on March 7, 1764, and officially named after King Charles I of England (the former Duke of Newbury), for whom one of its main streets is named. The city grew rapidly after the American Revolutionary War and rapidly became a center for merchant shipping. It was frequently raided by Tories during the war and many of its leading citizens were actively involved in the resistance movement.
In 1775 whole district was burned to the ground during General Gage’s raid on Fort William and Mary at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The General Gage House on High Street is a surviving example of the raid. With the establishment of the United States Customs Service in 1789, the port became one of the nation’s busiest. Many of the city’s wealthy families built Federalist homes on High Street and State Street.
During the War of 1812, a cannonball from the British ship HMSBOXER exploded on Main Street, killing or wounding more than 50 people.
On September 14, 1921, a fire destroyed an entire city block along Main Street, including 188 structures. The fire started in a garage on Center Street and quickly spread through the dry summer streets. It was the worst fire in Newburyport’s history and one of the worst in Massachusetts up to that time. The fire left more than 1,000 people homeless and destroyed nearly all of the city’s downtown business district.
The city’s rebuilding effort following the fire resulted in a massing of buildings and the creation of a new downtown street grid. The density of development and the masonry construction – some of it still standing – are a result of this urban planning. Many of the city’s federal style houses were built in the aftermath of the fire.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city became a center for the manufacture of shoes,textiles, and cigarettes. The city’s economy began to decline after World War II, as the shoe and textile industries moved their operations to cheaper labor markets overseas.
