History of Newberg

Newberg, Oregon is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 22,110 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yamhill County and is part of the Portland metropolitan area.

The city is located on the Willamette River, about 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Portland. With a mild Mediterranean climate, Newberg is home to a diverse array of grape growers and wineries. It is also the principal city of the Newberg–Dundee micropolitan area, which consists of all of Yamhill County and neighbor Polk County.

The city was founded in 1889 by Joel Palmer, a pioneer doctor from West Union, Iowa. Palmer designed the city after Dunedin, New Zealand, which he had visited. He named the city after his friend, Captain George von Phul, who had sailed around Cape Horn to Dunedin. Newberg was incorporated as a city in 1893.

Newberg is home to George Fox University, established in 1885 as the Friends Pacific Academy by a Quaker colony. In 1908, the school was renamed Pacific College and began offering fouryear degrees. In 1949, the name was changed to George Fox College, and then to George Fox University in 1986. The university is Oregon’s oldest private school and is affiliated with the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends.

The city is also home to the Air National Guard’s 142d Fighter Wing, which is headquartered at the Port of Portland’s Hillsboro Airport. The wing provides air defense for the Pacific Northwest and is also tasked with training pilots for both the Air Force and the Oregon Air National Guard.
