History of Newark (Ohio)
Founded in 1808 by Newark settlers, Newark is a city in and the county seat of Licking County, Ohio, United States, 33mi east of Columbus. The city was named after NewarkonTrent in England. Newark’s residents are called “Newarkers”. Its estimated 2019 population was 48,933. It is the principal city of the Newark, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Licking and Morrow counties.
The site along the Newark granitic ridge overlooking the confluence of the Licking with the Tuscarawas River was first settled about 1802. The Newark Granite, from which the city derives its name and Newark Earthworks, a State Historical Park, were two of the largest prehistoric architectural works in the United States. Newark earthworks are the remains of a walled, octagonal enclosure and associated peripheral mounds constructed by members of the Hopewell culture between 100 BCE and 500 CE. The earthworks constitute the largest Hopewell site in Ohio.
By the early 1830s, Newark had a population of approximately 1,600. It was the target of resentment by surrounding communities because of its status as the county seat. Between 1853 and 1860, Newark was a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping escaped slaves reach safety in the North. It is believed that Isaac Smith, Newark’s leading merchant at the time, was financially supporting the effort.
Newark’s Old College Building serves as The Works’ headquarters and the Licking County History Center. The Licking County Courthouse is located downtown. The city is governed by a sevenmember mayor–council system.
