History of New Windsor

New Windsor is a city in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7, 9000 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northeastern corner of the state, on the western bank of the Connecticut River, adjacent to Hartford and East Hartford.

The area now occupied by the city of New Windsor was originally part of the town of Windsor, which was chartered in 1633 by the Connecticut General Court. The first European settlers were Dutch, who established a small trading post on the bank of the river in 1633.

In 1635, a group of English Puritans led by the Reverend John Warham established a settlement on the east bank of the river, across from the Dutch trading post. This settlement was initially known as Dorchester, but was soon renamed Windsor.

The English settlers prospered, and within a few years had outstripped the Dutch in numbers and wealth. In 1637, the two groups united to form a single town, which was incorporated as a city in 1643.

During the American Revolution, Windsor was an important supply depot for the Continental Army, due to its location on the Connecticut River. After the war, the city flourished as a major center of trade and manufacturing.

The city’s fortunes were dealt a blow during the 19th century, first by the loss of the local steamboat trade to the Erie Canal, and then by the rise of the railroads. However, the city’s location on the Connecticut River continued to be an important asset, and in the second half of the century the city experienced a rebirth as a tourist destination.

Today, New Windsor is a vibrant small city with a rich history and a bright future.
