History of New Castle (Indiana)
New Castle, Indiana, was founded in 1823 by William Henry Harrison, the future 9th president of the United States. The city was named after his family’s ancestral home in England. Harrison had recently purchased the land on which the city stands from the Delaware Indians. New Castle was the first capital of the Indiana Territory and the site of the first Indiana State Fair.
The city grew rapidly in the 1830s and 1840s, thanks in part to the completion of the Whitewater Canal. This canal allowed boats to travel from the Ohio River to Lake Erie, making New Castle a key link in the trade network between the Midwest and the East Coast. The canal also helped the city to become an important manufacturing center. Among the products made in New Castle were carriages, wagons, furniture, and stoves.
The city’s prosperity came to an abrupt end in the 1850s, however, when the Whitewater Canal was badly damaged by floods and then abandoned altogether. New Castle’s economy never fully recovered, although the city did manage to remain an important agricultural center. Today, New Castle is a small city with a population of about 18,000. Its main claim to fame is its role in the history of Indiana.
