The city was established in 1813 and was named after the city of Albany in New York. The city has a number of historic buildings and sites. These include the Center for Puppetry Arts, the Cullerton House, the Floyd County Museum, the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, the John T. History of New Albany
New Albany is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, situated along the Ohio River opposite Louisville, Kentucky. The population was 36,372 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Floyd County. It is one of the principal cities of the Louisville metropolitan area.
New Albany was founded in 1813 by Scribner Sage. He settled near the present day site of Providence Englewood Cemetery. In 1814, Sage sold his land to the New Albany Inclined Plane Company. In 1816, the Indiana General Assembly authorized New Albany to be the seat of government for Floyd County and granted the city a charter. On July 27, 1818, the Senate and House of Representatives assembled in the first session of the General Assembly in the new capital city of New Albany.
The earliest industries in the area included shipping, Galt House, and flour milling. New Albany became known as the “Flour Capital of the World” and had the world’s largest flour mill, operated by Duke Wheat. These industries contributed to the city’s growth and wealth during the mid19th century.
During the Civil War, the city was a major focal point due to its strategic location on the Ohio River and its railroads. The U.S. government established Camp Noble and Camp Joe Holt in the city, which served as training camps for the Union Army. In 1864, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech in New Albany during a campaign visit. The city was also a stop on the Underground Railroad.
After the war, New Albany’s industries continued to prosper. The city became home to many prominent businesses and people. The Galt House was replaced by a new hotel, The Grand, which opened in 1908. Other notable businesses included the New Albany Flouring Mills, New Albany Country Club, Schindler Elevator Company, and the New Albany Building & Loan Association.
Prominent citizens included Timothy O’Sullivan, who served as the city’s mayor for two terms; John K. Mullen, who established the first Catholic church in the city; and Joseph W. England, who was a state senator and the owner of the England Brothers Flouring Mills.
The city continued to grow and prosper in the 20th century. The construction of the Sherman Minton Bridge in 1962 connected New Albany to Louisville, further boosting the city’s economy. Today, New Albany is a thriving city with a vibrant downtown, diverse businesses, and a rich history.
