History of Nebraska City
Nebraska City is a city in Otoe County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 7,289 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Otoe County and home to the Arbor Day Foundation.
The city was founded in 1854 by Dr. George Miller and named after the Nebraska Territory, of which it was then a part. Nebraska City was the first capital of the Nebraska Territory and house the territorial government from 1854 to 1855, when the capital was moved to Omaha.
The Pony Express Trail passed through Nebraska City, and the city was a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1882, Nebraska City was the site of the greatest forest fire in American history up to that time.
Today, Nebraska City is known for its many antique shops, its annual Applejack Festival, and its Arbor Day Farm, the headquarters of the Arbor Day Foundation. The city is also home to the Lewis and Clark Monument, dedicated to the famous explorers who traveled through the area in 1804.
