History of Naugatuck
Naugatuck was first settled in 1701, and officially incorporated as a town in 1807. The town was named after the Nawgatawog tribe of Native Americans, who once inhabited the area. The area was originally part of the town of Waterbury, but split off and incorporated as its own town due to the expanding industrialization of the early 1800s. The first factory in Naugatuck was built in 1812, and the town soon became known for its many rubber and brass factories. Naugatuck was also home to the first penny press newspaper in the country, The Republican American, which was founded in 1841.
During the Civil War, Naugatuck was a major supplier of Union Army supplies, due to its many factories. After the war, the town continued to grow and prosper, with new factories and businesses opening up. In the early 20th century, Naugatuck became known as the “Footwear Capital of the World”, as it was home to over 50 shoe factories. The town’s economy faltered during the Great Depression, but recovered somewhat during World War II, when the town’s factories supplied materials for the war effort.
