History of Natick

The town of Natick, Massachusetts is located about 15 miles west of Boston. It is a part of Middlesex County and has a population of approximately 33,000 people. The land on which Natick sits was first settled by the Algonquin Indians who called it ” Natick” meaning place of hills. Early English settlers arrived in the 1650’s and the town was officially incorporated in 1651.

During the American Revolution, Natick was an important center for the production of military supplies. The Continental Army had a major depot in Natick where they stored weapons and ammunition. Many of the soldiers who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill were from Natick.

The shoe industry has been an important part of Natick’s economy since the early 1800’s. At one time, there were over 60 shoe factories in Natick. The last shoe factory in Natick closed its doors in the 1990’s.

Today, Natick is a thriving community with a strong commitment to education and the arts. It is home to several hightech companies and is also a popular tourist destination.
