History of Nashville (Indiana)
The first people to settle in the area of what is now Nashville, Indiana were Native Americans. The first European settlers to arrive were French fur traders, who set up a trading post in the area in the early 1800s.
In 1814, the area was officially established as a town by the Indiana Territorial Legislature. The town was named after Francis Nash, a general who had fought in the Revolutionary War.
Nashville grew slowly but steadily in the early years, with the first school being established in 1821 and the first church being built in 1823. By 1836, the town had a population of around 500 people.
The 1840s were a decade of growth for Nashville, with the population reaching 1,000 by 1844. A number of new businesses were established during this time, including a newspaper, a foundry, and a woolen mill.
The 1850s were a decade of upheaval, both nationally and locally. The country was embroiled in the Civil War, and Nashville was a staunchly Union town. In 1861, a group of Nashville residents formed a “Home Guard” unit to help protect the town from Confederate troops.
