History of Nashua
Nashua, New Hampshire, was first settled about 1654 by members of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was then known as Dunstable, and was made part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1673. The name Nashua is thought to have come from the Pennacook Indian word meaning “river with a pebbly bottom.”
The town grew slowly but steadily, and by the early 1800s had become an important manufacturing center. The first factory in Nashua was built in 1803, and by the 1850s the city was known as the “Manchester of America” because of its many textile mills.
