History of Narragansett
The history of the city of Narragansett in the United States can be traced back to the early 17th century, when the first European settlers arrived in the area. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of natural resources, including timber and fish. The first European settlement in the Narragansett area was established in 1636 by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams obtained a charter from the Rhode Island General Assembly for the establishment of a new colony, which he named Providence.
Providence quickly became a thriving community, and in 1644 Williams obtained a charter for a second colony, which he named Newport. Newport became an important trading center, and in 1652 the first Baptist church in America was founded in the city.
The Narragansett tribe played a significant role in the early history of the state of Rhode Island. The tribe was at first hostile to the European settlers, but eventually signed a peace treaty with Williams in 1638. The tribe continued to interact with the settlers, helping them to survive the harsh winters and providing them with food and supplies.
In 1675, the Narragansett tribe again went to war with the European settlers, this time joining forces with the Wampanoag tribe in what is known as King Philip’s War. The war was fought largely in Rhode Island, and resulted in the death of many settlers and the destruction of several towns. The Narragansett tribe was defeated, and its members were forced to flee to Connecticut.
The history of Narragansett is thus closely intertwined with the early history of the state of Rhode Island. The city has a rich colonial history, and its relationship with the Narragansett tribe is an important part of that history.
