History of Nappanee
Nappanee is a city located in northern Indiana, United States. The city is in Elkhart County and is part of the ElkhartGoshen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is also the county seat of Elkhart County. The population was 6,648 at the 2010 census.
The name Nappanee is derived from the Miami Indian word napanee, meaning “sugar maple tree”. The city was founded in 1834 by a group of pioneers from New York State. They were attracted to the area by the fertile land and the abundance of sugar maples. The first settlers built log cabins and began clearing the land for agriculture.
In 1851, the first schoolhouse was built in Nappanee. In 1852, the first church was organized. The first newspaper, The Nappanee Eagle, was published in 1854. In 1856, Nappanee was platted as a village. In 1866, it was incorporated as a city.
The years following the Civil War were prosperous for Nappanee. The city became a regional center for commerce and agriculture. The population grew and new businesses were established. In 1871, the Nappanee Opera House was built. It served as a venue for entertainment and political speeches. In 1887, the Elkhart and Western Railway was completed, connecting Nappanee to Elkhart and the outside world.
The early 20th century was a period of growth for Nappanee. New factories were established and the population continued to increase. In 1908, the Nappanee Street Railway was established, providing streetcar service to the city. In 1913, the Nappanee Water Works was completed, providing the city with its first municipal water supply.
