History of Napa
Founded in 1847 by Nathan Coombs and George Yount, Napa was the first town in the Napa Valley and served as its capital until the county seat was moved to the city of Calistoga in 1874. The origin of the name is uncertain, but some believe it was derived from the Native American word napaki, meaning “house”, while others believe it was a corruption of the Spanish word napa, meaning “vegetation” or “covering”.
In 1848, Napa became the county seat of Solano County, and in 1850, it was designated as the state’s capital for a brief period of time. In 1851, Napa was incorporated as a city and became the permanent county seat.
The city grew rapidly during the second half of the 19th century, due in part to the Gold Rush, which brought many miners and prospectors to the area in search of treasure. The construction of the Napa Valley Railroad in 1864 also played a role in the city’s growth, as it made transportation of goods and people much easier.
