History of Nampa
Nampa is a city located in the southwestern part of Idaho, in the Boise metropolitan area. Nampa is the largest city and county seat of Canyon County, and the secondlargest city in Idaho. The population of Nampa was 81,557 at the 2010 census.
The area now known as Nampa was first settled by Native Americans over 10,000 years ago. By the early 1800s, the area was frequented by fur trappers and mountain men. In 1834, the first Fort Boise was built by order of the Mexican government to keep the peace between the Shoshone and Bannock peoples.
In 1863, the Idaho Territory was established, and Fort Boise was abandoned. In 1866, the argsid lava beds near presentday Lake Lowell were discovered, which led to a mining boom in the area. The town of Nampa began to take shape in 1887, when the Oregon Short Line Railroad chose the site as the eastern terminus of its line.
Nampa officially became a city in 1890, with a population of just over 1,000. The years following World War II saw a period of growth for the city, as the agricultural and military industries expanded. Today, Nampa is a thriving community with a diverse economy.
