Nailsworth is a picturesque market town in the county of Gloucestershire, England, situated in the Stroud Valley between the River Frome to the north and the River Severn to the south. It is approximately 10 miles (16km) northeast of Stroud and 6 miles (9.7km) northwest of Gloucester, and lies within the parliamentary constituency of Stroud. The town is twinned with BerryauBac in France.
The Cotswold Way national trail passes through the town and the nearby Stancombe Hill is a destination for hillwalkers. Nailsworth is home to several interesting buildings including the Gothicstyle Minchinhampton parish church, the timberframed Market House and the Peaceful Revolution House.
Nailsworth’s history dates back to the Roman occupation of Britain, when the town was known as Glevum. During the 12th century, the town was granted a charter by King Henry II and became a market town. Nailsworth is a town in Gloucestershire, England. It is located in the Cotswold Hills, on the edge of the Stroudwater Vale and approximately 4mi northeast of Stroud.
Nailsworth was first recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as ‘Nailsworde’, meaning ‘wooded hill where nails are found’. A small hamlet, it was part of the manor of Minchinhampton, and grew slowly until the late 18th century when it became a centre for the local woollen industry. The coming of the turnpike road in 1792 and later the tramroad in 1811 improved communications and resulted in the growth of the town, which reached a population of around 3,000 by the mid19th century.
During the Industrial Revolution, Nailsworth became an important manufacturing town, with woollen mills, tanneries and iron foundries. In the 20th century, these industries declined and the town became a dormitory town for the nearby cities of Bristol and Gloucester. However, in recent years Nailsworth has undergone something of a renaissance, with the growth of independent shops and businesses breathing new life into the town centre.
