History of Nahant
Nahant is a coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The town is located on a small island off the northeast coast of Massachusetts, about 8 miles (13 km) south of Lynn and 15 miles (24 km) north of Boston. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge and causeway. The 2010 census recorded a population of 3,410 inhabitants. With just 4.0 square miles (10.4 km2) of land area, it is the smallest municipality by land area in the state. It is one of only four landlocked municipalities in the state.
Nahant was first settled in 1630 by Roger Conant, who came from the nearby city of Lynn. Prior to that, what is now Nahant was an area inhabited by Native Americans of the Agawam tribe. The name “Nahant” comes from the local Native American word for “point or headland”.
The original settlers were farmers, but Nahant’s location on the Boston Harbor made it ideal for fishing and lobstering, which soon became the main industries. Tourism also began to become important in the late 19th century, with wealthy Bostonians building summer homes on the island. Nahant is still largely a residential community, with a summer population that swells to as much as 15,000.
The town’s share of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area includes Tory Island just offshore. In addition, the town is home to sand beaches, including Black Rock and Pipe Cove Beach. The town’s landmarks include Short Beach, Thorndike Island, Maddocks Island, and Eastern Point Light.
