Nags Head is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It is on a narrow strip of land just south of Nags Head Inlet. The population was 2,757 at the 2010 census. Nags Head is a tourist destination and is one of the affluent communities on the Outer Banks. It is home to the Wright Brothers Memorial, the first flight monument in the world.
The town’s name was derived from a “nag’s head”, a type of gibbet once used to warn ships away from the dangerous sandbars off the coast. These sandbars, which were exposed only at low tide, eventually became the site of the first Nags Head Hotel. Built in 1797, it was the first hotel on the Outer Banks.
The town’s first post office opened in 1800. By 1813, the town had fifty residents and ten dwellings. A United States LifeSaving Service station was established in 1874, and the Nags Head US Coast Guard Station was established in 1903.
The Town of Nags Head was incorporated in 1953.

History of Nags Head
Nags Head is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It is on Bodie Island, part of the Outer Banks. The population was 2,757 at the 2010 census. The town is home to Jockey’s Ridge State Park and the Nags Head Woods Maritime Forest Preserve.
The first known inhabitants of the area now known as Nags Head were the Hatteras Indians, who settled on Roanoke Island in the early 16th century. They were eventually driven out of the area by the English.
The first English settlers came to the area in the early 18th century, and established farms and plantations. The town of Nags Head was established in 1713, and named for the practice of putting a strawfilled sack on the head of a horse to attract gnats, which were then used as fish bait.
In 1775, the first lighthouse in North Carolina was built on Nags Head. The original lighthouse was replaced by a new one in 1803, which was in turn replaced by the present day Nags Head lighthouse in 1853.
The town of Nags Head was incorporated in 1899.
During the Civil War, the town was occupied by Union troops. In 1864, the Union soldiers built a fort on the northern end of town, which was later named Fort Nag’s Head.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Nags Head became a popular resort destination, with numerous hotels and vacation cottages being built.
In the mid20th century, the town began to experience rapid growth, as people began moving to the Outer Banks yearround. This growth continued into the 21st century, and the town’s population continues to increase.
