The village was named after German Catholic theologian Cardinal Karl Adolf von Kundt, who was created a cardinal in the year 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. The village is home to two universities, Carmel High School, and a public library. Mundelein has a Metra station on the North Central Service, which provides daily service to Chicago.

As of the 2010 census, the village’s population was 31,064. Mundelein is well known for its attractive neighborhoods and high quality of life. History of Mundelein
The Village of Mundelein is a suburban community located in Lake County, Illinois, United States, and it is about 30 miles northwest of Chicago. The village was incorporated on February 21, 1909. The 2010 census indicated a population of 31,064.
Mundelein’s history begins with the Potawatomi Indians who once dominated the area. Chief Mundelin was a Potawatomi leader during the early 19th century. mundelin means “little island” in the Potawatomi language. The area that is now Mundelein was originally known as Mechanics Grove when the first EuropeanAmerican settlers arrived in 1833. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Alexander and John Brown, who claimed158 acres (64 ha) of land near what is now the intersection of Town Line Road and Lake Street. In 1835, the Browns built a log cabin on their land. By 1839, the Browns had cleared 15 acres (6.1 ha) of their land and began farming. The U.S. government formalized the Browns’ claim to their land with a land patent in 1840. In 1841, the Browns sold their farm to David Adler for $800.
Adler built a sawmill, gristmill, and butcher shop on his property. In 1843, he subdivided his land into lots and sold them to farmers and land speculators. The community became known as Adler’s Mill. The first church in Adler’s Mill was founded in 1846. In 1856, the congregation of the church built a wooden structure on the corner of what is now Mill and Fremont Streets. This building served as both a church and schoolhouse. When the Civil War began in 1861, many Adler’s Mill residents joined the Union Army. Two companies from Adler’s Mill fought in the famous Battle of Gettysburg. By 1865, the population of Adler’s Mill had grown to 300 people.
In 1868, the Village of Mundelein was incorporated. The first village president was Marcus A. Nash. Nash served as president for two years. In 1870, the population of Mundelein was 500. In 1872, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed Adler’s Mill. The fire started on October 8, 1871, and spread to Adler’s Mill on October 9. The mills and most of the houses in the village were destroyed by the fire. The only structure left standing in Adler’s Mill was the church/schoolhouse.
After the fire, the village was rebuilt. New mills and factories were built, and new home construction began. In 1874, a new church was built to replace the one that was destroyed in the fire. This new church was built of brick and was located on the corner of what is now Mill and Lake Streets. In 1875, the village had a population of 600. In 1877, the first Mundelein College was founded. Mundelein College is a Catholic college for women and it is located on the northwest side of town.
In 1909, the Village of Mundelein was incorporated as a city. The first mayor of the city was George A. Weimar. In 1916, the completion of the Mundelein College quadrangle added four new buildings to the campus of the college. These buildings were designed by the famous architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1924, the Village of Diamond Lake was annexed to the City of Mundelein. The annexation nearly doubled the size of the city.
