History of Mountain View

Mountain View was first inhabited by the Ohlone people, who arrived in the area over 10,000 years ago. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were a Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portola in 1769. The town was initially called “El Monte del Diablo”, which translates to “The Devil’s Mountain”. In 1851, the town was renamed “Mountain View” after the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains.

During the California Gold Rush, Mountain View was a popular stop for prospectors and miners traveling to and from the Sierra Nevada foothills. A number of mines were established in the mountains around Mountain View, and the town became a hub for supplies and transportation.

In the early 1900s, Mountain View began to grow rapidly as a suburban community for San Francisco Bay Area residents. The Santa Clara Valley electric railway was built in 1903, making Mountain View one of the first towns in the Bay Area to have electric streetcar service.

Following World War II, Mountain View experienced another wave of growth as veterans returned to the area and new industries such as hightech companies moved in. Today, Mountain View is a thriving city with a population of over 74,000. It is home to expansive parks, worldclass restaurants, and a vibrant culture.
