History of Mount Vernon (Ohio)

Mount Vernon is a city in Knox County, Ohio, United States. The population was 16,990 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County. Mount Vernon is located along the Kokosing River 35mi east of Columbus, Ohio. It is also the principal city of the Mount Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Knox County.

The city was named after George Washington’s plantation, Mount Vernon, which was named for Edward Vernon, a British naval hero.

The Mount Vernon area was first settled by European Americans in the late 18th century. James Hardin built a cabin along the Kokosing River in 1788. The area became known as Hardin’s Station. A fort was built there during the War of 1812. The community was platted in 1817, and two years later, the community’s name was changed to Mount Vernon, after the nearby plantation.

In 1848, the Ohio Wesleyan University was founded in Mount Vernon. The city is also home to the Mount Vernon Nazarene University, established in 1968.
