History of Mount Vernon (New York)

It is difficult to overstate the importance of Mount Vernon to the history of the United States. Situated on the East Coast along the Hudson River just north of New York City, Mount Vernon was once the country’s largest city. It was the site of the first presidential inauguration, the first capital of the United States, and the home of George Washington, arguably the most important figure in American history.

Founded in 1664 by English settlers, Mount Vernon was originally part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area, and they named it after the town of Middelwerck in the Netherlands. The English took control of the colony from the Dutch in 1674 and renamed it New York.

During the American Revolution, Mount Vernon was a major military base for the Continental Army. Washington first arrived in Mount Vernon in 1775 to take command of the Continental Army, and it remained his headquarters throughout the war. The Continental Congress also met in Mount Vernon on several occasions, including the First and Second Continental Congresses in 1774 and 1775.

After the war, Washington returned to Mount Vernon and retired from public life. However, he was called back into service in 1787 to attend the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He was then elected as the first president of the United States in 1789 and was inaugurated in Mount Vernon in April of that year. He served two terms as president, after which he returned to Mount Vernon once again. He died there in 1799 at the age of 67.

Since the death of George Washington, Mount Vernon has been preserved as a historical site. It is now a National Historic Landmark and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States.
