History of Mount Pleasant (South Carolina)

Mount Pleasant is a city in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 63,452 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is the fourthlargest municipality in South Carolina, and for many years it was one of the state’s fastestgrowing areas, doubling in population between 1990 and 2000.

Mount Pleasant is located on the north end of the Charleston Harbor, across from Charleston. The harbor was formerly known as the Port of Charleston and is one of the largest on the East Coast. The name “Mount Pleasant” is derived from the name given to the area by early English settlers. The name translates to “pleasant mount” or “fair mount”, referring to the alternative meaning of Mount Pleasant.

The first European settlers in Mount Pleasant were English colonists who arrived in 1680. The first permanent settlement was established in 1730. The city was incorporated in 1814.

During the American Civil War, Mount Pleasant served as an important supply and hospital center for the Confederacy. Plans were made to attack Charleston from the north, but theUnion blockade of Charleston Harbor prevented these plans from being carried out.
