Mount Holly is a city in northwestern Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. The city name is derived from a hill in central Mount Holly Township on which the city sits. Mount Holly was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 6, 1865, from portions of Mount Holly Township, based on the results of a referendum held on March 7, 1865. The township was officially dissolved and absorbed into the city on April 1, 1894.
The city borders both Mount Holly Township and Eastampton Township. It is 45 minutes northeast of Philadelphia and about 1.5 hours from the Jersey Shore. The 2010 United States Census counted 9,536 people, 3,575 households, and 2,290 families, residing in the city. The population density was 5,844.7 per square mile (2,253.0/km). There were 4,025 housing units at an average density of 2,435.0 per square mile (939.2/km). The racial makeup of the city was 67.28% White, 23.64% African American, 0.27% Native American, 2.62% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.94% from other races, and 3.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.32% of the population.
There were 3,575 households, out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.3% were married couples living together, 24.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were nonfamilies. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35.0 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and over, there were 83.0 males.
The Census Bureau’s 2006–2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflationadjusted dollars) median household income was $42,024 (with a margin of error of +/ $4,438) and the median family income was $50,088 (+/ $5,440). History of Mount Holly
The first permanent European settlement in what is now Mount Holly Township was established in 1679, when approximately 60 Quaker families from England settled in thearea. At that time, the area was part of Chesterfield Township and was located in Burlington County. The community was known as North Chesterfield.
The township was established in 1798. It was named for the Holly bushes that grow in the area. The first town meeting was held on May 1, 1798, at which time
Mount Holly was divided into six wards.
The townspeople were active during the American Revolution. On December 22, 1776, the British occupied Mount Holly. The Continental Army retook the town on January 3, 1777.
In 1857, the Camden and Mount Holly Railroad was completed, providing transportation to Philadelphia and Camden.
The Town Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1883.
Mount Holly became a city in 1889.
The racial makeup of the city has changed over time. In 1970, the population was 96% white. By 1980, the population was 58% black. In 1990, the population was 43% black. The 2010 census showed that the population was 41% black and 54% white.
The city has a number of historic homes and buildings. The John Woolman Memorial, dedicated to the Quaker missionary and social reformer, is located on High Street. The Mount Holly Cemetery, founded in 1794, is the final resting place for several notable citizens, including John Woolman, Rebecca Larrence, and William Weir.
The Mount Holly Historic District, which includes the city’s central business district, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The district includes a variety of architectural styles, including Georgian, Victorian, and Queen Anne.
